NIA is a Swahili word that means "with purpose". It also stands for "Neuromuscular Integrative Action". Put quite simply, Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from 9 movement forms...Stressing that everything is done in YOUR "Body's Way" and timing. Nia's philosophy is "through movement we find health"... Nia is "movement medicine"!It is also an acronym of the powerful affirmation: "Now I Am", with emphasis on exploring learning to be more present in the moment and Natural Time.
The Nia Technique is a personal growth (body/mind/spirit) fitness program that promotes a lifestyle that supports our individual needs in these areas with creative and intentional purpose. Through the use of expressive movement – all done in The Body’s Way – Nia is a wonderful alchemy of Nine Healing Arts: three dance arts, three Martial arts, and three healing arts. There is emphasis on Nia's #1 Principle: "the Joy of Movement". Within this framework, Nia supports the Pleasure Principle of "if it feels good, keep doing it. If it hurts, stop." This is achieved by your choice of movement done at three different levels. This allows you to tweak, create, play with, and even modify or amplify your movements at any time. Nia is adaptable to every level of fitness, to every age and body type, and even for those with special limitations, making this method accessible and fun for everyone.
NUTS and BOLTS of NIA:
Seen in this light, Nia is a living, holistic system that works with the body’s natural wisdom and intelligence. The goal is to move from rigidity to liberation; creating from the inside out. This allows your own emotions, feelings, and how you may experience the depth of music, to connect with your body as well as your spirit. Nia offers you the freedom to embrace your unique creativity, responses, self-inquiry, and free expression. Each Routine is taught for several weeks -"Sessions"- to allow you to get "out of your head" and the mechanical end of moving,"embody the movements", and eventually gain freedom to integrate the physical with the mind/emotions/spirit --- and to just have FUN!
This is all masterfully accomplished within the framework of safe, grounded, and expressive movement that involves no jarring, pounding or repetitive jogging or lifting. The Nine Arts Movements all blend into routines that provide low impact, yet also provide sound strength moves and cardio-vascular conditioning. You will sweat! Nia is traditionally done barefooted, with kindness to your joints and whole-body movement that will work all extrinsic and intrinsic muscles in the process.
The Nine Arts Movements are carefully selected and combined to create a multi-dynamic and multi-directional chemistry. Each different routine is a fusion that places emphasis or intent in different areas....These routines can fuse any of the following of the Nine Arts Movements: Jazz, Modern, and Duncan Dance; the Martial arts of Tai Chi, Tai Kwan Do, and Aikido; and the healing arts of Alexander Technique; Feldendkrais Method; and Yoga. This is all designed to bring that “neuromuscular integrative action” into effect, providing that deep connection of the body to the mind, spirit, and emotions….allowing growth and healing to take place in all realms of our “Body Electric”! It is interesting that Nia is also recognized as a form of somatic psychotherapy, the branch of psychology that is based on the belief that certain physical actions, when integrated with positive thought, can help unlock emotional blocks.
